================================================================================ GALAXY SPIRAL PITCH ANGLES — 4D TRANSITION OBSERVATION ================================================================================ Date: 2026-03-21 Status: COMPELLING, NOT CONCLUSIVE Caveat: Pitch angle → spiral ratio mapping needs rigorous derivation. Numbers land where predicted but the derivation chain has gaps. ================================================================================ OBSERVATION: The unverified_prediction.txt (Section: 5/3 RATIO, added 2026-03-18) predicted two pitch angles from the dimensional formula: Phi spiral (d=3): 17.03° 5/3 spiral (d=4): 18.01° And stated: "A STATISTICAL TEST: does the mean galaxy pitch angle fall closer to 17° (phi) or 18° (5/3)? If it's 18°, the cosmic cone is 4D-dominated (5/3)." DATA (analyzed 2026-03-21 from public datasets): Hart et al. (2017) Galaxy Zoo 2 — 6,222 SDSS spiral galaxies: Mean: 19.06° Median: 18.69° Std: 2.28° Peak: 17-19° (single mode, not bimodal in this dataset) Kennicutt (classic) — 112 spiral galaxies: Mean: 13.68° Median: 13.50° Peak: 12-15° Source: github.com/tingard/hierarchical-modelling-of-spiral-pitch-angle Data files: hart_psi_table.csv (6222 galaxies), Kennicutt_pitchangles.csv INTERPRETATION: The GZ2 median of 18.69° falls: - 1.66° ABOVE the phi pitch (17.03°) - 0.68° ABOVE the 5/3 pitch (18.01°) The data is closer to the 5/3 (4D) prediction than the phi (3D). This is consistent with galaxies being cosmic-scale systems where the 3D→4D transition has had billions of years to develop — they should be FURTHER along the transition than atoms. The Kennicutt peak at 13.5° is from a different measurement method and smaller sample. The discrepancy between 13.5° and 18.7° is likely methodological, not physical. WHY THIS IS COMPELLING: - The prediction (17° vs 18°) was made BEFORE the data was checked (pre-registered in unverified_prediction.txt, 2026-03-18) - 6,222 galaxies is a large sample - The peak falls between phi and 5/3, leaning toward 5/3 - Galaxies being 4D-dominated is consistent with the gradual unfolding model (cosmic timescale > atomic timescale) WHY THIS IS NOT CONCLUSIVE: 1. The mapping from spiral ratio to pitch angle needs rigorous derivation. The formula used (pitch = arctan(ln(ratio)/(π/2))) is for a logarithmic spiral but the galactic spiral may not follow this exact form. 2. The GZ2 pitch angles have a narrow range (15-26°) and low std (2.3°). The difference between 17° and 18° is within the measurement uncertainty for individual galaxies. 3. The GZ2 median (18.7°) is actually ABOVE 5/3's 18.01° by 0.7°. If the prediction were exact, the median should be AT 18.01°. Being 0.7° high could indicate: measurement bias, the actual ratio being slightly different from 5/3, or noise. 4. Different measurement methods give very different values (Kennicutt 13.5° vs GZ2 18.7°). This suggests systematic differences that need understanding before interpreting the absolute values. 5. Cherry-picking risk: we checked the GZ2 data AFTER knowing what we wanted to find. The prediction was pre-registered but the specific dataset was chosen post-hoc. ADDITIONAL FINDING — GALAXY PITCH ANGLE EVOLUTION: Published research confirms pitch angles DECREASE over time (galaxies wind tighter as they age). This is consistent with f+A|t: decreasing amplitude → increasing organization. "A weak but distinct tendency for the pitch angle to decrease as we approach the present-day epoch" — Marchuk & Sotnikova 2023 (A&A, "The possible evolution of pitch angles of spiral galaxies") Galaxy Zoo also found: "observations suggest local spiral galaxies are WINDING" — Hart et al. 2020 (MNRAS) This means older galaxies have TIGHTER spirals (more organized), consistent with the theory's prediction that structure increases as amplitude decreases over time. STATUS: COMPELLING, NOT CONCLUSIVE. The pitch angle peak near 18° was predicted before data was checked. The winding-over-time finding supports f+A|t. But the derivation chain has gaps and measurement systematics need resolution before this can be claimed as evidence. ================================================================================
